Home Thai language lesson.

Lesson Format & Phonetics.

The lesson uses English as well as Phonetic Thai using standard English combinations to help you say the words correctly.

  1. English = Pasa Engrit.
  2. THAI = Pasa Thai.

Sentences use BOLD, ITALIC as well as BOLD ITALIC to help you see the sentence format.

ONETWOTHREE = NUNGSONGSARM

Speaking Thai at Home

Let’s get right into the home itself and start you with some common requests & questions. Let’s look at the house and how it’s made.

  • Roof – Lungcar
  • Ceiling – Pedan
  • Wall – Panung
  • Window – Natung
  • Curtian- Par Marn
  • Door – Pradoo
  • Lock – Lock koon jair
  • Ķey – Koon jair
  • Floor – Peun
  • Open – Perd
  • Close – Pit

What could we do with these parts of the home? Certianly we can Open and Close doors & windows. We also can Turn On and Turn Off items that will come soon.

Note: The Thai language uses both Turn On & Turn off as well as open and close with the same prases. It could be confusing but don’t worry.

Let’s look at some examples for you to use.

  • Open/Turn On = Perd
  • Close/Turn Off = Pit

A few simple examples you could hear in daily life.

  • Pit pradoo. = Close the Door.
  • Perd Pradoo. = Open the Door.
  • Turn on the light. = Perd Fai.
  • Turn off the light. = Pit Fai.
  • Turn on the TV. = Perd TV (Toratat).

Speaking Thai at Home – Rooms in The Home.

Thai Family Room.

Learning what the rooms in a house are called is also very useful when starting out. Let’s look the rooms and then combine turn on and off light, as well as opening and closing doors to these rooms. This builds your competency quickly but simply.

Male and females end sentences differently in Thai when it’s a statement. Males use Krup and Ladies use Kar, so please add the relevant one to the end of the sentence. It’s akin to a full stop in English but spoken.

Question are noted by adding MAI (?) to the end of the sentence. In this case where MAI is used Krup / Kar is not normally used.

  • Lounge room – Horng Lup Kek.
  • Kitchen – Horng Kwar.
  • Bedroom – Horng Non.
  • Bathroom – Horng Narm
  • Toilet – Horng Swum
  • Close the door to the bedroom. – Pit Pradoo Horng Non (Krup/Kar).
  • Open the bedroom window. – Perd Natung Hong non Kar.

It’s worth noting that these sentences look abrupt in the way the requests are made. Unlike English (pasa Engrit), Thai does not use please and thank you as westerners would to be polite. The Kup/Kar do the same job but it’s also worth noting that at home even this will be dropped for convenience generally.

Speaking Thai at Home – Home Furniture & Items.

Modern Thai Kitchen.

It’s time to look at more household items in the home and expand your vocabulary some more. Let’s get started.

  • Chair – Tee Nung
  • Table – Toh
  • Bed – Tee Non
  • Wardrobe – Doo Seeah Par
  • Clothes hangar – Mai fan.
  • Pegs – Kip
  • Broom – Mai Gwat
  • Cupboard – Doo
  • Light – Fai
  • Fan – Pat Lom
  • Sofa – Sofa
  • Refrigerator- Doo Yen
  • Freezer – Doo Keng
  • Clothes – Seeah Par
  • In – Nai

Lets practice with a few common and useful questions and answers. If you do have someone to practice with then say them several times then go test drive them.

As with most languages there can be alternate ways of saying things for sure. Your test subject may suggest alternatives, thats fine. These are the basic sentences that very Thai will understand!

I will assume for the examples your a male and your partner is female for simplicity. Really all you need to adjust for your situation is the Kar or Krup at the end of a statement.

  • Please turn on the fan. – Perd Pat lom Kar.
  • Turn off the light in the bedroom please. – Pit fai nai horng non kar.
  • Can you get me some hangers from the wardrobe. – Kor mai fan jark doo seea par Kar.
  • (Kor = Is used when asking for something. Its like can I have?)
  • Can you get the clothes from the sofa please. – Kor Pai Ow Seeah Par jahk So-fa Hai Noi (Kar).

I have made these a little longer with multiple facets and added some new words which are highlighted for you. The word “TEE” in Thai is a bit of a multi purpose word used like to/is for example. Its one of those fill in words we use in English to create a sentence that flows. It joins parts of a single sentence.

A new word I have added is ” KOR” which is to ask for something. Can you _________? is simply: Kor _______________?

Thai Language in the Kitchen.

Thai Lady Happy

Let’s dive into the kitchen where there are a lot of different items. Take your time with all these new words. It is as always possible to substitute items within a sentence so you could exchange plate for bowl etc. These examples as always are templates to common questions or requests.

  • Kitchen – Horng Kwa
  • Refrigerator- Doo Yen
  • Freezer – Doo Keng
  • Ice – Narm Keng
  • Water – Narm
  • Bottle – Quat
  • Knife – Meed
  • Fork – Chorn Sarm
  • Spoon – Chorn
  • Rubbish bin – Tungkaya
  • Empty – Ting
  • Plate – Jarn
  • Bowl – Toy
  • Milk – Nom
  • Milk bottle – quat nom
  • Food – Aharn

OK let’s practice with some very common sentences you will likely hear in daily life.

  • Take the rubbish bin out please. Pai Tungkaya hai not.
  • Can you get me a glass of cold water please? Pai Ow gow narm yen hai noi.
  • Put the milk in the fridge? Ow quat nom sai doo yen kar.
  • Is there any ice? Mee narm keng Mai?
  • Is there any milk in the fridge? Nom mee nai dooyen mai?
