Home Practice Amplifiers – 10 Watt Max
Buying a great home practice guitar amplifiers is likely to be your next decision and as always you have a great number of choices. What do you need? Is it a home practice amp solely for practicing with friends or will you need something more substantial to compete with the drums in your band.
Lets look at some great home practice guitar amplifiers up to around 10 watts. These will be plenty loud at home but most likely wouldn’t keep up with a good drummer.
There are many options available from solid state guitar amplifiers to the much loved tube amplifiers and these are available at many power levels. You may be surprised how loud a small 10 watt amp actually is!
If your not wanting a small amplifier but want to practice at low volumes with the tone you love you can use attenuation guitar amp which allows you to turn the amp up to 11 but here it like it was only at 1-2.

Guitar Amplifier – Combo’s & Valve Amps
There is a new decision for you to make. Do you want to buy a guitar amplifier that is complete and ready to pick up, the convenience of a small package with options of amp modeling and lots of effects? Or do you desire the warmth and power of a tube guitar amplifiers for your rythem or lead playing. When you are looking for an amp you have to consider this as well as cost.
These days there are some good inexpensive tube amplifiers but these require looking after a little more than Solid State amps. What amplifier is best for you is a personal question.
Personally I used a Marshall 8240 TubeState Amp which does have a Valve in the preamp stage but solid state for the main power amp with 40 watts with Chorus and two channels switched with a foot switch was convenient.
On paper and in theory these two approaches should yield identical result, but in actuality the difference is usually quite noticeable. Another point to make about tube amps is that bigger is not always better. You get the most distinctive tube sound when the amp is cranked up enough so the tubes are saturated or nearly saturated, creating the over driven sound revered by tube-amp fans.
Tube or Valve Amplifier?
Whats important is that Valve or Tube guitar amplifiers work best when nearly full volume where as you can get a great tone from a Tube State amp at lower volumes. The purest will always head for the tube amp so choosing a smaller 20 watt one could be a better choice as you can play it at near full volume and get the tones without blowing the audience out the room.
Lets look at whats available in both Combo and Valve Amps. Its also worth noting most valve amps are generally just heads so you then need to think of a speaker combination. These will be 2,2 or 4 speakers.
The types of speakers you will consider then will depend on the music you play. You can see its a lot to consider. Staring out a Combo will give you great flexibility to start with. Consider all that is available and chat with other guitarists if you can and get advice from someone that uses a great guitar amplifiers regularly. Is it intended for home, band practice or stage is the consideration in power choice.
